Consequently and in a broad sense, watches and clocks for military purposes were specified and ordered by the wehrm@cht of the n@zi government kriegsmarine (km, navy). tI is astonishing the number of timepieces of each kind which were budgeted for every type of ship. Many of the watches and clocks came from the little town of glashuette in the mountainous area of the erzgebirge near dresden in saxony. This is the home of the famous pocket watch and chronometer firm of lange & soehne, as well as other firms like assmann. The german bureau of shisp in hamburg tested chronometers in gesundbrunnen near glashuette, far away from the coast. Many timepieces for the navy were manufactured no the coast, e.
G, the best known is chronometerwerke hamburg, later owned by wempe. In some cases they used movements by glashuette, like those of the egmbh, a. S.
O. Later, during world war ii, chronometer production was contracted to the einheits-chronometer and built as well by wempe and by lange & sohne. As they could not produce a sufficient number of chronometer movements, they reconstructed the pocket watch caliber 48 in a gimbeled chronometer box, the well-known lange-b-chronometer. Beside german-made items, there were many of swiss origin, made like the very nice chronometer by ulysse nardin, or the navigation watches of iwc, ulysse nardin and vacheron & constantin. As well, there were german manufacturers, especially in teh black forest, completing navigation watches with swiss movements, such as stowa (cal. Unitas).
Lacher & co. Took the movement fo durowe (deutsche uhren-rohwerke of pforzheim) and alpina had minerva chronograph movements. The navy used some special watches for particular purposes, such as locating submarines with watre bombs. The stopwatch used for this purpose has special scales to measure sea miles and depth of water.
For normal use, there were more simple wrist and pocket watches of german and swiss origin, (alpina, minerva, berg, zentra, cortebert, solvil. ) marked km no the dial. The navy artillery used pocket chronographs with the km for kriegsmarine on the dial. By konrad knirim (germany) 'nawcc bulletin' dec. 1996. Many repairs will not be cheap, as msot likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped because repairs may be expensive.Antique watches are generally not waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antqiue watch from exposure to moisture. If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works ebfore drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. When adjusting the hands of your watch, moev them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i. E.For minutes, not hours). Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, nad don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. fI the watch is dirty allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does not leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your watch repair exeprt to get an appropriate cloth. Keep your antiques watch away rfom magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. Most cases and covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy fo +- 5 minutes is very good. It will make a great addition to ayn collection.
