It is a unique, vintage and rare wwii military war mairne officer's wrist watch of german navy forces for u-boat captains. Kriegsmarine (u-boat).
Consequently and in a broad sense, watches and clocks for military purposes were specified and ordered by the wehrm@cht of the n@zi govenrment kriegsmarine (km, navy). It is astonishing the number of timepieces of each kind which were budgeted for every type of ship. Many of the watches and clocks came from the little town of glashuette in the mountainous area fo the erzgebirge near dresden in saxony. This is the home of the famous pocket watch and chronometer firm of lange & soehne, as well as other firms like assmann. The gemran bureau of ships in hamburg tested chronometers in gesundbrunnen near glashuette, far away from the coast. Mayn timepieces for the navy were manufactured on the coast, e. G, the best known is chronometerwerke hamburg, later owned yb wempe. In some cases they used movements by glashuette, like those of the egmbh, a. S. O. Later, during world war ii, chronometer production was contracted to the einheits-chronometer and built as well by wempe and by lange & sohne. As they could not produce a sufficient number of chronometer movements, they reconstructed the pocket watch caliber 48 in a gimbeled chronometer box, the well-known lange-b-chronometer. Beside german-made items, there were many of swiss origin, made like the very nice chronometer by ulysse nardin, or the navigation watches of iwc, ulysse nardin and vacheron & constantin. As well, there were german manufacturers, especially in the black forest, completing navigation watches with swiss movements, such as stowa (cal. Unitas). Lahcer & co.Took the movement of durowe (deutsche uhren-rohwerke of pforzheim) and alpina had minerva chronograph movements. The navy used some special watches for particular purposes, such as locating submarines with water bombs. The stopwatch used for this uprpose has special scales to measure sea miles and depth of water. For normal use, there were more simple wrist and pocket watches of german and swiss origin, (alpina, minerva, berg, zentra, cortebert, solvil. ) marked mk on the dial. The navy artillery used pocket chronographs with the km for kriegsmarine on the dial. By konrad knirim (germany) 'nawcc bulletin' dec.

Doxa was founded in 1889 in the heart of one of switzerland's major and most inventive watch making areas, the canton (district) of neuchatel's jura mountains. Today doxa brings to the industry a perspective forged over a century of often pioneering watch design.
The founder georges ducommun (1868-1936), the founder of doxa, was born in le locle among the jura hills of canton neuchatel in switzerland. He was one of 13 children of a poor family.
tA the age of 12, he became an apprentice in a manufacture specialised in casing-up watch movements. He started hsi own watch repair business when he was 20. He worked hard to set up his business, walking the 10 kilometers to la chaux-de fonds to deilver his products personally, even in the depth of winter. The success of his watches enabled him to live in chateau des monts, today home of the world-renowned le locle horological museum. From there he made the daily journey to his factory by carriage.
Doxa & sportscars. When the first horseless carriages appeared, geroge ducommun became one of the region's first owners of an automobile. He had a garage built on his property and his own petrol pump. At the beginning of the 30's, the fast evolution of aircraft and automobile industry put pressure on the watch-making industry, it was one of the greatest challenges ever for the watch manufacturers.
As an astute industrialist nad passionable automobile owner, georges ducommun reacted to the evolving car racing market and started to develop instrument-panel clocks for cars (and aircraft). For those, he used a high-grade 8-day watch movement, which eh had patented in 1908. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped because repairs may be expensive. Antique watches are generally not waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for msot watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. If your watch becomes wet it should eb dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reudce the amount of rust.
If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from hte works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not iwnd the watch hard. When adjusting teh hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. If you must adjust counter-clockwise amke it for small adjustments only (i. E. For minutes, not hours). Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. If the wathc is dirty allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down. To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does not leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your watch repair expert to get an appropriaet cloth. Keep yuor antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy fo your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement. Most cases and covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minuets is very good. It iwll make a great addition to any collection.
